For Donald Trump the 2016 elections aren’t over yet, he is still running his election campaign, trying to win all the support for himself he can. He proved to be more of a politician than anybody else notable either on the Democratic or the Republican party. We all know, that he is no gun freak or collector, he is rather into women and airplanes.
It’s clear that Donald Trump and his cabinet has no clear-cut public stance on the 2nd amendment, he is known to be posting mixed messages on the issue.
Trump stated back in early March that he would prefer taking the firearms first and then going to court, skipping due process and totally breaking this very important legal principle. “I like taking the guns early,” he announced.
Wikipedia defines due process as: “Due process deals with the administration of justice and thus the Due Process Clause acts as a safeguard from arbitrary denial of life, liberty, or property by the government outside the sanction of law.”
Since he is a
Unfortunately, because of these statements made by him, he clearly has little idea about not just the Anglo-Saxon legal system, but also about the 2nd Amendment and its implications to civil society.
During these days, still at the beginning of March, when Trump ordered Attorney General Jeff Sessions to examine and potentially rewrite the existing regulation in order to prohibit bump stocks by classifying weapons equipped with them as machine guns, sales of which are tightly restricted and require a Class 3 firearm license. Back then he stated: “I’m going to write the bump stock; essentially, write it out. So you won’t have to worry about bump stock.” At this point, I am sure that Donald isn’t even being advised properly on these issues. He also started blaming Obama, instead of taking the problem head-on, by asking: “Why didn’t we get this done after Newtown?”
At the end of March he released this “presidential” tweet:
Trump being Trump he communicates with the American public by ‘Tweets’, although it might and it will most likely backfire on him soon in the future.
The last piece to this puzzle which completes the picture and reveals what’s going on can be understood after reading this article. According to the referenced article ran by the New York Times, upon Donald Trump and his wife visiting Broward Health North Hospital “to pay their respects and thank the medical professionals for their life-saving assistance,” according to a statement related by a White House spokeswoman on Friday evening.
When asked if he met with victims, Mr. Trump said: “Yes, I did. I did indeed.”
“It’s sad something like that could happen,” he said. Mr. Trump did not respond when he was asked if gun laws needed to be changed. He then walked into another room.
This pretty much explains why Trump never wanted to speak during the 2016 presidential election campaign and its continuation into
“We have gangs roaming the street. And in many cases, they’re illegally here, illegal immigrants. And they have guns. And they shoot people. And we have to be very strong. And we have to be very vigilant.”
Trump is clearly not taking any side in the gun control debate, he was only in it speaking about it in order to gain even more supporters rallying behind him. The U.S. president continues this behavior of his to this very day, however, he, himself is nor directly helping upkeep the 2nd Amendment, neither he is pushing for gun control. It’s the most likely that at least we will not see any form of gun control or useless regulation dealing with bump-stocks coming from Trump or somebody who can be connected directly to him.
By not taking a clear political stance claiming to care about the Second Amendment, while having his advisors working on alleged gun control bills – bills that will most likely won’t even be realistically considered – he is not alienating a big chunk of his existent or future support base since a good portion of people were turned on and converted to be gun control advocates, while a similarly big chunk (there are 300 million+ firearms in civilians hands in the U.S.) of the American population is an avid supporter of the Second Amendment who are mainly residing in the states which made him win the 2016 elections.
Meanwhile, in places like Deerfield, IL and in Toronto and Montreal in Canada, local governments are pushing for more and more gun control, and if Donald Trump keeps behaving this way in some counties the Second Amendment will be wiped out without having it repealed on the federal level.
